Newt’s Cape Plugins

Two small useful plugins for Newt’s Cape are available here: LaunchRSS and LaunchPLS.

In case you didn’t know, the Newton has a very cool piece of software that will let you pick up those RSS/RDF news syndication feeds that are popping up everywhere: Raissa. But you usually have to discover these feeds manually, and manually enter their URLs into your Newton.

Enter LaunchRSS. This package is a helperApp for Steve Weyer’s excellent Newt’s Cape web browser. It allows RSS/RDF feeds to be saved from a web page directly to Raissa. Currently the stream/playlist/MIME types supported are:

  • text/xml (.rdf, .rss, .xml)
  • text/plain, for brain-dead webservers (.rdf, .rss, .xml)

Lots of websites have been tested, and I haven’t come across a problem yet. Any site that provides an RSS/RDF feed should work just peachy.

With the advent of MAD Max, the Newton’s very own MP3 player, many people have been using Newtons with Ethernet cards as streaming MP3 players. It’s a little difficult to get the right stream URLs into MAD Max, though.

Enter LaunchPLS. This package is a helperApp for Steve Weyer’s excellent Newt’s Cape web browser. It allows MP3 streams to be saved from a web page directly to MAD Max. Currently the stream/playlist/MIME types supported are:

  • audio/mpegurl and kissin’ cousin audio/x-mpegurl (usually, .m3u files)
  • audio/x-scpls (.pls files)

And the following web sites have been tested:

Any site that provides links to .m3u or .pls files should work. If there’s a problem, I’d appreciate a comment in the box below.
