  • A novel way to get a job…

I was walking downtown at lunchtime today and saw this guy standing outside First Canadian Place at Bay and King – arguably the busiest intersection in Toronto, and the centre of the financial district. A novel way to try and get a job, that’s for sure. Maybe he should have a phone number or something on his sign – or is that considered soliciting? Click for the full-size image.

    Desperate.

    Title on the sign:

    I am a Knowledgeable & Experienced
    FACILITY MANAGER
Seeking A Position To Continue My Career
  • Last night was quite the adventure in networking. I played Mario Kart: Double Dash in LAN mode, with my friend Jon who lives about 200km away in London, Ontario. No, we don’t have a cable that long – we used some very cool software called Warp Pipe.

Warp Pipe was easy enough to setup, however the performance was lacking. On my end most of the games stuttered quite a bit. I guess this is the price to pay for putting your packets on the bit bad ‘net instead of keeping them safe on the LAN. Still I thought that the performance would be better.

Well I was browsing the forums over at the Warp Pipe and it seems like the problem might have been Norton Antivirus on my computer… I guess I’ll just have to try again.

  • Busier than a bee in a 100 acre clover field

    • Work work work work
    • Doing training at work (sucks)
    • Didn’t go to the extremely cool WWNC, now regretting it, but going to the next one even it it’s located at the centre of the earth
    • Succeeded in letting people down
    • Busiest four day week EVER was last week. Actually, it was probably my busiest week of work ever, period.
    • Saw Resident Evil: Apocalypse, it was OK, fun to see TONS of locations around Toronto turned into “Racoon City”
    • Saw Shaun of the Dead, it was hysterically funny while being gory at the same time, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. It’s getting a North American theatrical release now, so go see it!
  • I resemble this remark…

Broadband users are impatient – Apparently people who have Broadband expect the same speed of service in real life. I can definately vouch for that. I’ve personally had broadband in some form since 1998 and even before then had broadband in high school. I’m also highly impatient in line at stores.

  • fun on the train this morning

CBC Toronto – Man shot dead in downtown stand-off – This was going on as I got off the GO Train in Union station this morning. The station was evacuated, Front St was closed from Yonge to University (a very busy street during the morning rush), no one was being let into the underground PATH either.

  • yay for neighbours!

This morning our neighbour Mike gave me a ride to the GO Station! It was raining and was probably going to miss the train if something didn’t happen. Thanks!

  • Near -crushing If there’s

Near -crushing If there’s something I’ve learned from living in Toronto and attending UTS, it’s how to jaywalk.

UTS, my former high school, is situated at the corner of Bloor & Spadina in Toronto. This is a very busy intersection at most times of day and night. When I went there, there was a Pizza Pizza And a Second Cup right across Bloor St from the school. Obviously, these were popular lunchtime destinations, and so I quickly learned how to jaywalk, including standing on the yellow line as cars and trucks went by inches away.

Now I cross the street twice a day at the corner of Church and Front / Wellington Streets. I know the exact timing and behaviour of the traffic signals. Today on my walk to Union station I crossed Church Street against the signal because there were no cars turning from Front Street. Standard Procedure most of the time. However there was a streetcar that wanted to turn right from Church on to Wellington. The driver started to turn but then stopped when he noticed I was crossing in front of him. Guess I narrowly averted being crushed. Once I made it across, I started to cross Wellington, again against the signal. Hey, there were no cars! But remember the streetcar? Yeah, it was turning. And the driver didn’t notice me this time. Somehow I sensed the streetcar and turned around and headed for the safety of the sidewalk. A couple of guys patiently waiting for the signal to change and who saw all of this told me I was going to die. I smiled, gave them a thumbs-up, and kept walking.

Pay attention to those streetcars, kids.

  • Screw you too, Showtime

Apparently Showtime doesn’t want me to access their highly sensitive information – it’s for US residents only. Stupid boneheads.
